How does it work? P. Acnes, the bacteria that causes most acne, produces a substance called Protoporphyrin IX. When this substance is heated by the green light from the KTP laser it releases singlet oxygen, which is bacteriocidal. Additionally, the laser stimulates a healing response in the treatment area which significantly reduces future outbreaks for about 6 months to a year.

Does the treatment hurt? Most patients report mild discomfort when the laser pulses that feels like a hot pinprick for a fraction of a second. We recommend using a topical anesthetic (available in our clinic) before having this procedure to minimize any potential discomfort.

Also, the Gemini™ KTP laser features CoolSpot™ technology that chills the surface of the skin before, during, and after the laser pulses. It quickly and efficiently takes left over heat away from the skin's surface, protecting it and making the procedure more safe, effective, and comfortable than many systems that do not use this technology.

Will the Acne ever come back again? The healing response stimulated by the KTP laser lasts for about 6 months or more. At that time another series of treatments may be necessary.
